# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Grange

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave the motor off then keep the ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm happens till your engine pulls it round.

In Grange, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Grange

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.

- Put your hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.

- Ring just where you are. Quote a WA7 5 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Not to do:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.

- Switching your key to ignition alone starts your pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- Adding more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.

- Even a short stretch along Grangeway is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Draining your tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

Moving the vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Grange forecourt you are on, the Asda included.

On your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate instead of blending — entirely different from fuel.

It sinks, since it is denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its supply from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Rocksavage last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

It attacks some metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches till it is removed completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it till morning around Grange leaves it worse. Inside the tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Shell, and the issue is diluted fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in the tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether the vehicle sits in Weston or the heart of Grange, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

As with petrol, there's good news.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Cheshire your car is standing.

## Grange: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Halton Lodge Nursery & Primary School.

Close to Larch Road, a driver tips a container in on that drive after work.

Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park outside The Cherry Tree, and someone opening that flap the first time.

Rented cars, new cars, fleet vehicles, or the second car in a family with both fuels: the least familiar cars see it most.

Same mistake, an identical first step — leave it off — anywhere you are in Grange or the rest of Cheshire.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Grange?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

It's been drawn through your filter and your lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each might show up, perhaps part way across Grange or coming back from Runcorn Golf Course.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off rather than testing it again.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M56, under 3 miles from Grange, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Hopping across Grange to the car park by Kingdom Hall is one thing; driving towards Chester, under 15 miles away, is something else, because each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped.

When it is caught quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Grange?

A road by St Andrew, Grange, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere the car has come to rest around Grange, our engineers travel to it.

Three answers decide the job, and so before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, about the amount, and whether the motor has run.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts far more with urea than for petrol.

After that, the filter: cleaned, or changed if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of your car.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the last step.

Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, at Runcorn or on a driveway in Grange.

Before leaving, our technicians check it is running correctly with clean diesel in.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## AdBlue drains across Grange and Cheshire

AdBlue jobs around Grange are passed to teams that cover the towns near it — Heath, Halton Brook as well as Stenhills — and most of Cheshire further out, throughout WA postcodes.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're by a border, or somewhere tricky to explain.

A van that comes to you fits Grange, a residential suburb: there's no need to take the car to us, because we drain it on the spot, on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Grange?

Every job is different, so not one single price is honest.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind Hope Corner Community Church.

Which fluid got in, how much, and if it ran: every Grange call begins by asking exactly those, before any quote, not after.

The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Our price is given during the call, before a van sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Alongside your car in Grange, right now?

In that case, do nothing — that's the most helpful move available.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether the engine ran are everything we ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Cheshire, Grange included.
