# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Grange Corner

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the engine has not run, it's drained and thoroughly purged where the car sits around Grange Corner.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of current diesels on the roads round Grange Corner and Toome carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for each tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## Grange Corner: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Wallace Cottages, or at the pub in the village on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a new car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It takes seconds, whether in Groggan or bang in the centre of Grange Corner.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Ahoghill or a forecourt in Grange Corner, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many motors mark what belongs in which filler right there.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere in County Antrim the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush beside B842 at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The two under one flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel filler stays shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Grange Corner?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the car away if asked.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Grange Corner.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

The next junction is where to leave if you're on the M77, over 50 miles from Grange Corner.

A short hop across Grange Corner is a smaller job than a run towards Belfast, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Grange Corner: what happens when our technicians arrive

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near the centre or on your own drive.

Those replies determine this work and our price, so we ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Then our engineers fire it up and check it runs correctly before we go.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need roughly half an hour once our engineers are there.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
