# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Grange: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not run, it is drained and fully cleaned where the car is around Grange.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many newer diesels in Frankby, like those in Grange, carry on two liquids; the engine takes just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for each tank.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both side by side under one flap.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt call-out, again and again.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## Grange: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Black Horse Hill before work, or in the car park outside Ring O'Bells on the way home.

New-to-you motors come next, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, carries on.

Whether it takes place in West Kirby or the middle of Grange, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Hoylake or a forecourt around Grange, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says which.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you collect a hire car or company car — at West Kirby's car park, say — rather than when the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere across Merseyside the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Lang Lane South.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Grange already?

Brief list, then. Top of that: the engine stays off.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Morrisons, Esso or another forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle away when asked.

At home around Grange? So the vehicle remains where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Grange sits under 3 miles from the Moreton Spur; on it, take the first junction.

A short hop across Grange is a smaller job than a run towards Liverpool, under 10 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What takes place when our technicians get there in Grange

By Black Horse Hill Infant School, close to Sandstone Beacon or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Those answers settle the work and the price, and so we ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run.

No one heads out until you've had our quote over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. Hence it counts more.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Next our engineers start it and confirm it runs properly before we go.

Unstarted vehicles mostly mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Anywhere it sits — near Mariner's Beacon, on a layby heading to Grange Park, at home — that's where it gets drained.

Assuming doesn't help behind West Kirby Cenotaph, on a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down; phone and check.

## In short, for Grange people

Read the cap before you tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across Merseyside, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — and so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
