# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Grange Park: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, leave your ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

In Grange Park, catching it before your engine turns normally means draining and a full flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Not one liquid but two: that is what plenty of modern diesels near Grange Park and Toll Bar carry, with diesel for the engine.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

There's a filler on every tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in the gap that the mistake lives.

## Grange Park: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a drive off Scholes Park before work, or in the car park at The York on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Grange Park or out in Portico.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Grange Park forecourt or a drive out in Thatto Heath, take a couple of seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Thatto Heath.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Merseyside that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Main Avenue.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Grange Park already?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Texaco, Shell or another forecourt will usually help pushing the car clear if you ask.

At home around Grange Park? So the car stays where it is.

Already run? Pull over when it's safe, then turn off.

The next exit means the place to leave if you're on the M57, under 3 miles from Grange Park.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Liverpool, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Grange Park.

## Grange Park: what happens when our engineers turn up

By Nutgrove Methodist Primary School, close to St Matthew or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

We ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run, because those replies decide this work and the price.

No one sets off before you have had the quote by phone.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out unaided. Hence it counts more.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your car.

The motor is started next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before we leave.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our engineers get there, provided your motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.

## Grange Park and Merseyside: AdBlue drains across the area

Grange Park is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the places around it, Brown Edge and Nutgrove among them, across the WA postcode area.

A postcode starting WA10 3 gets the van to you fastest.

The car stays where it is.

Draining happens right there, whether a drive, a road by St Austin's Church, or a lay-by towards St Benedicts Wood.

Guessing won't help at the back of Nutgrove Methodist Church, close to a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; phone and ask.

## The short version for Grange Park drivers

Pour nothing until you have read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave the vehicle switched off and ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, across Merseyside.
