# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Grangetown: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, keep your ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Grangetown, catching it before the motor runs normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many current diesels on the roads about Grangetown and Riverside carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Grangetown?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off St Fagan's Street, or at The Grange on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar vehicles are next, too. Rentals, new motors and company cars place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It's seconds, be it in Butetown or bang in the heart of Grangetown.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Grangetown forecourt or a driveway over in Penarth Flats, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Cardiff that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Clive Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- Both behind one flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel side is still shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Do not go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Grangetown?

Don't start the motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Texaco, Shell or another — the attendants will normally help roll the vehicle away, if you ask.

If you are on your own drive around Grangetown, leave the vehicle where it sits.

When the engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe and turn the vehicle off.

The next junction is the place to come off if you are on the M4, under 5 miles from Grangetown.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Grangetown is less a job than a run of under 3 miles to Cardiff, so tell us.

## What happens when our technicians arrive in Grangetown

By the local primary school, near Grangetown Baptist Church or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since the replies decide the work and the quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Then your tank is cleared and the system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Next our technicians start it and check it runs correctly before we leave.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run need about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains around Grangetown and across Cardiff

Grangetown is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the places around it, Penarth Moors and Leckwith among them, across the CF postcode area.

Give a postcode that starts CF11 7, and our van arrives fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to shift.

Wherever it sits — near Saint Paul's Church, on a lay-by en route to Grange Gardens, on a drive — that is where it is drained.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Saint Patrick's Grangetown Church, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## In short, for Grangetown drivers

Before you pour, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere across Cardiff, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
