# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Great Barford? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing starts until your motor sucks it round.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully flushed where the vehicle sits in Great Barford.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Great Barford

Things to do:

- So no one can switch the ignition on, pull the keys out.

- Put your hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.

- Which product, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers can see.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting MK44 3, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Don't:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to reposition the car.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No more fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it is pointless.

- Even a short distance along High Street is too far to drive it.

- Emptying the tank yourself by the road is not one to try.

At a forecourt in Great Barford, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car clear of the petrol pump.

Parked on your own drive? Then it remains just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Blunham last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid waits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through once your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

What remains when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out.

Pipes carrying AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle sitting around Great Barford. Only in that tank, it stays the same.

Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger problem?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that's the whole fault.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is in that tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Deposits and corrosion stay through the next fill, and AdBlue separates again out of your diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Chalton or the heart of Great Barford equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Bedfordshire the car is sitting.

## Great Barford: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle picked up while driving home and tipped in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual story.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Great Barford Church of England Primary Academy.

Near Green End Road, someone tips a bottle in at home in the evening.

One more pattern: dim light, the car park outside The Anchor Inn, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

Rented vehicles, new cars, fleet vehicles, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least familiar cars see it the most.

Keep it switched off: that is the first response to the same mistake, wherever in Great Barford or the remainder of Bedfordshire you happen to be.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Great Barford?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

Through the filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's where it has gone.

Maybe coming back from Palaceyard Wood, or part way across Great Barford, the motor might run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, flash your dash or stall.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the A1(M), under 15 miles from Great Barford, by the first junction and park safely, not carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system. That is why crossing Great Barford to park beside Great Barford Methodist Church and a drive of under 25 miles for Milton Keynes are very separate jobs.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once your engine has been run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

Spotted soon, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## Great Barford: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped around Great Barford — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a street beside All Saints Church — our van travels to the vehicle.

Three replies decide the work, so before anything else we ask which fluid went in, about the amount, and if your motor has run.

Right there, your tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash away unaided, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts much more with urea than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where the motor hasn't run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming the fuel system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

Starting the car comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, at Sandy or on a drive in Great Barford.

Before we leave, we check it is running properly with new diesel in.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to go to a garage.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Great Barford?

Since each jobs vary, a flat figure would not be honest.

What moves the cost is, first of all, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Blunham Village Cemetery Chapel.

For that in mind, each call from Great Barford begins with the same trio — what went in, what quantity, if it ran — before a figure.

Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

Our quote is given on the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## In Great Barford and still beside the car?

Then, do nothing — that is the best step available.
