# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Great Berry: Why It Happens

Keep your engine and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before your motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Great Berry.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Not one liquid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Great Berry and Steeple View carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## Great Berry: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Mandeville Way before work, or in the car park at Hungry Horse on the way home.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Great Berry or out in Southfields.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Great Berry or a drive over in Westley Heights. A few seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.

- Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? Then check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you collect a rental or company car — at Laindon's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across Essex the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and not rushed beside Kenton Way at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, and look again — confirm the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Great Berry already?

Short list, then. First: your motor remains unstarted.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Tesco or the Total, ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the petrol pump.

Your own driveway around Great Berry is where it should stay.

Already run? Pull over once it is sensible, then switch off.

The next exit means the place to come off if you're on the M25, under 10 miles from Great Berry.

Distance matters — a short hop across Great Berry is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles to Chelmsford — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when we turn up in Great Berry

By Merrylands Primary School, near The Berry Hills Pavilion or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

Our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run, since the replies settle this work and our price.

That quote comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Then that tank is emptied and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of that clears away on its own, no matter how long it sits.

After your filter is flushed — or replaced, if required — clean diesel is added, and finally the vehicle is tested.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and check that it is running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once we get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
