# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Greatness

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, leave the ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Greatness, finding it before the engine runs normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the engine — yet plenty of modern diesels driven round Greatness and Noahs Ark carry a second fluid too.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Greatness?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Ash Platt Road, or at The Five Bells on the way home that evening.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the tip starts, no part halts it.

Seal or the heart of Greatness: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in St Johns or a forecourt around Greatness.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- On many motors, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it lives when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Bat & Ball.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — anywhere it is in Kent — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Pinehurst, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Greatness?

Brief list, then. First: the motor remains off.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Esso, BP or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the vehicle away if you ask.

Your own drive in Greatness is where it should stay.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M26, under a mile from Greatness, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Greatness is a smaller job than a run towards London, under 25 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Greatness: what occurs when we arrive

By Seal Church of England Primary School, close to Seal Library or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Both the work and our price rest on three replies — which liquid, what amount, and if it's run — so our technicians ask.

No one sets off until you've had our quote by phone.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out unaided. That is why it matters more.

After the filter has been flushed — or renewed, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and then the car gets tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run take about half an hour after our technicians arrive.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It is worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## About Greatness, for a moment

Greatness is a suburban area in Kent, situated approximately 21 miles southeast of central London. Greatness sits at an elevation of around 91 metres, amidst the rolling countryside of the Weald of Kent. Greatness is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is located near the villages of Seal and Sevenoaks, with Wildernesse and Childsbridge also in the vicinity.

## Greatness and Kent: AdBlue drains across the area

As a residential suburb, Greatness shares its vans nearby areas — Wildernesse, Childsbridge — all the way through TN postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

A postcode starting TN15 0 gets our van to you fastest.

The vehicle does not need to move.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Seal Village Hall, a lay-by on the way to Seal Recreation Ground, a drive.

Guessing won't help behind St Peter & St Paul, close to a boundary, or somewhere awkward to describe; phone and ask.

## In short, for Greatness motorists
