# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Green Lane

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the motor.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits around Green Lane.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Green Lane, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Things to do:

- Take the keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so don't bin it away.

- Give us a postcode starting BB2 4, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to reposition your vehicle.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run the pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, so it is wasted.

- Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Green Lane.

- Draining that tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move your vehicle away from the island if you're on a forecourt around Green Lane, whether it's the EG On the Move or elsewhere.

At your own driveway, do not move it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It does not combine. After it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

A motor filled on a driveway in Mill Hill yesterday evening and left unstarted is the simple one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once your motor turns, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny channels; and, because it attacks some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays inside.

Pipes holding AdBlue mean damage by morning for a vehicle parked in Green Lane. Just in the tank, it stays stable.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water content damages them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Texaco, and the problem is thinned fuel.

Blended into your diesel and sitting unused, it is no threat for now; using the engine is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It does not burn, and so it can't simply be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Moorgate or the middle of Green Lane.

As with petrol, there is good news.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Lancashire your car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Green Lane?

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and after dark the two may look the same. No one intends it.

A container bought while heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the usual story.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Meadowhead Junior School the top-up is rushed.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a driveway close to Fielding Crescent.

Another version: darkness, a pub car park outside The Wellington, and someone using that flap for the first time.

Hired cars, new cars, company cars, or the second car in a family with both fuels: the least known cars get it most.

Keep it off: that is the first step to an identical mistake, wherever around Green Lane or the remainder of Lancashire you are.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Green Lane?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via your filter and pipework.

You may see the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Cockridge Wood or halfway across Green Lane.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Green Lane lies under 3 miles from the M65; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Green Lane to the car park by Greenfield Communoty Centre is a very different job from a run towards Preston, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to rinse out once your engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where your car has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it's spotted quickly.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Green Lane: what it takes

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Green Lane: a side street close to St John Vianney, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the job, and so before anything else we ask which fluid was put in, about the amount, plus if the engine has run.

Then your tank is cleared where the car sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

After that, your filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. Then fresh diesel, then a test of the car.

Engine not run? In that case expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Finally, the fuel system is bled with clean diesel.

You head off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Green Lane or in a space at Cherry Tree.

The test before we go is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

## About Green Lane itself

Green Lane is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the riverside with an elevation of 124 metres, and is located near the city of Preston. Green Lane has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most predominant, and is close to nearby places such as Waterloo and Feniscliffe. Green Lane is part of the wider North West region, and is approximately 183 miles from London.

## AdBlue drains across Green Lane and Lancashire

AdBlue jobs in Green Lane are passed to teams that cover the towns around it — Waterloo, Feniscliffe as well as Cherry Tree — and much of Lancashire beyond, throughout BB postcodes.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

Green Lane is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Green Lane?

No flat figure could be fair, because every job is different.

Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, since an open drive is simpler for a technician to reach safely than a tight spot behind Cherry Tree Library.

Before any figure, not afterwards, every enquiry from Green Lane begins with the same three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus if the engine ran.

Given those replies, a range narrows to one fixed number.

The quote is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is travelling, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.

## In Green Lane and still alongside the car?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, across Green Lane or anywhere in Lancashire, once you call 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and whether it ran.
