# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Green Lane

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, leave your ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Green Lane.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the engine — but many newer diesels seen about Green Lane and Park Farm carry another fluid as well.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Plenty of cars share a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on each forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in the gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Green Lane: how it takes place

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up together.

On a driveway off Redditch Road before work, or in the car park outside Washford Mill on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: a strange vehicle.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, keeps on.

Whether it occurs in Woodrow or the middle of Green Lane, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt around Green Lane or a drive out in Greenlands. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many motors show which belongs in each filler right there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Redditch.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across Warwickshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Studley Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Stop once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently through the built-in spout.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Green Lane already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — BP, Harvest or any other — the staff will normally help roll the car away, if you ask.

If you're on your own drive around Green Lane, leave the car where it is.

Where your engine has run by now, stop safely and turn the vehicle off.

Green Lane sits under 10 miles from the M42; on it, take the next exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Green Lane makes a smaller job than heading under 15 miles to Birmingham — so tell us about how far it went.

## Green Lane: what happens when our engineers get there

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether outside Studley Infants' School, near Entaco or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

What liquid got in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since the answers decide the work and price.

During the phone call itself, you hear our price — ahead of anything else.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Before we leave, we fire it up and confirm that it's running properly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Green Lane and Warwickshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a rural hamlet, Green Lane has the same vans as surrounding places — Studley, Washford — all the way across B postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Quickest of all: quote a B80 7 postcode to the van.

No need to move the car.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Laser Conflict Ltd (The Golf Centre), a lay-by on the way to Studley Common, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Studley Community Library.
