# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Green Lane? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and your ignition as well.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

The harm starts once it is sucked through the lines — it won't burn, and it will not blend with diesel.

If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly flushed where your car sits in Green Lane.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Green Lane, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

- Pocket your keys, and that prevents someone turning the electrics on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Give us a postcode starting CV3 6, or whatever street lies nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so ring from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Shifting the car just a short way is no reason to start your motor.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Green Lane.

- No draining it yourself, either, at the verge.

The attendants working at any Green Lane filling station — the BP among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask.

At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes.

Nothing in a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of that was intended to go through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps apart instead of blending — quite unlike fuel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the same spot the pickup sucks from.

When your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it sits underneath the diesel, and that is why a vehicle topped up in Canley Gardens last night and never started stays the simple one, as long as nobody touches your key.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it stays inside.

If the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it till morning in Green Lane makes things worse. Inside that tank only, time does nothing.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running past them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Esso, and the issue is diluted fuel.

No harm is done while it stays put, blended into your diesel — only once your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Cheylesmore or the middle of Green Lane.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Wherever across West Midlands the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to empty.

## Green Lane: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle picked up when heading home and poured in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Grange Farm Primary School.

Someone tips the bottle in outside their house, just off Bathway Road, as the day ends.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The Burnt Post, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

The least known cars get it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, company ones, and the spare vehicle of a home with one of each fuel types.

Wherever you're in Green Lane or the rest of West Midlands, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Green Lane, and your engine started?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the fuel filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each might appear, perhaps midway across Green Lane or coming back from Stivichall Common.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M6, under 10 miles from Green Lane, by the first junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Green Lane to the car park by St Martin in the Fields is a very different job from a run towards Coventry, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to flush once the engine has been started, and our technicians do all of it where the car has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage if it's noticed quickly.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Green Lane: what it takes

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Green Lane: a side street near Woodside Avenue Methodist Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has been run, because those replies determine this work.

Next, emptying your tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

After that, your filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. After that fresh diesel, then a check of your car.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, if your engine hasn't run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Lastly, the system is bled with new diesel.

After that our technicians start the car and you drive off, whether from a parking bay at Coventry or a driveway in Green Lane.

The test before we go is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

No garage is required at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Green Lane

Green Lane is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Coventry, near the River Sherbourne, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Green Lane sits at an elevation of around 88 metres, close to the city centre and nearby neighbourhoods such as Stivichall and Finham. Green Lane is part of the larger West Midlands conurbation, but remains a distinct residential community with its own character. Green Lane is also within commuting distance of major cities, including Birmingham and London, which is approximately 85 miles to the southeast.

## AdBlue drains around Green Lane and across West Midlands

Throughout the CV postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs in Green Lane serve most of West Midlands as well, Stivichall, Finham and Canley among them.

Ring and ask rather than guess when you are close to a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down.

Green Lane is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it is, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Green Lane: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no honest single quote, because the jobs aren't the same.

Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, since an open driveway is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind West Orchard United Reformed Church.

Ahead of a quote, not afterwards, each call from Green Lane opens with three questions: the liquid, the amount, and if the engine ran.

When those are answered, a range turns into a single firm figure.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## In Green Lane and still alongside your car?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, then, the best move you can do.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Green Lane or anywhere across West Midlands.
