# Greenbank: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave your engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Greenbank.

Not happened yet? Below, the page explains the reasons it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels in Kingsmead, as well as Greenbank, carry on two fluids; your engine gets just your diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

There's a filler on every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs in Greenbank

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running out means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Beach Road, perhaps outside The Greenbank Hotel on the way home after work.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, keeps on.

Whether it happens in Hartfordbeach or the middle of Greenbank, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Greenbank forecourt or a driveway out in Leftwich, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it beside your diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Wherever in Cheshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of A559, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Stop once your tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly using its own spout.

- Close the cap, then check again — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. After that, start the car.

Find during the second or third step that AdBlue went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Greenbank already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the BP, the another forecourt nearby or anywhere else.

On your own drive in Greenbank? So the car remains where it is.

Already started? Pull over when it's safe, then turn off.

The next exit means where to leave when you are on the M6, under 10 miles from Greenbank.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Greenbank makes a smaller job than driving under 25 miles towards Chester — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What happens when our technicians turn up around Greenbank

Outside Winnington Park Community Primary and Nursery School, near Christ Church, Greenbank or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three answers — which liquid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or replaced if necessary.

Next our technicians start it and confirm it runs properly before we go.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.
