# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Greenfields

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

In Greenfields, finding it before your engine turns normally leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

Here in advance? In that case what follows covers why it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels on the roads around Greenfields and Spoonley carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for the two, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Greenfields: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Hampton Drive before work, or in the car park at The Gingerbread Man heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and after the tip starts, no part stops it.

It takes a few seconds, whether out in Market Drayton or right in the centre of Greenfields.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Greenfields or a driveway over in Longford Turning. Seconds, no more.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — at Prees's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Shropshire that is.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Stuart Way.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Greenfields: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of that tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Morrisons, Shell or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push your car clear when you ask.

If you are on your own drive in Greenfields, leave the car where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M6 — under 10 miles out of Greenfields — at the first exit.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Greenfields is a smaller job than heading under 25 miles towards Stoke-on-Trent — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers arrive around Greenfields, what occurs?

By Market Drayton Infant & Nursery School, near Beacon Community Centre or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

What fluid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those replies set both work and quote.

On the phone call itself, you hear our price — ahead of dispatch.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. That is why it matters more.

After the filter is flushed — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel is added, and finally your vehicle gets tested.

Before we go, our technicians start the car and confirm that it is running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as your motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

## About Greenfields itself

Greenfields is a suburban area in Shropshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 90 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Greenfields lies approximately 15 miles from Stoke-on-Trent and is close to nearby places such as Market Drayton, Little Drayton, and Longslow. Greenfields has a population of around 3308 people and is located in the West Midlands region, about 139 miles northwest of London.

## AdBlue drains about Greenfields, and Shropshire beyond

Over TF postcodes, the vans covering Greenfields — a residential suburb — work the nearby locations too, Longslow and Little Drayton included.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting TF9 3.

Moving your car isn't needed.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Market Drayton Library, a lay-by on the way to Market Drayton Town Football Club, a driveway.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Indoor market, ring and ask instead of guessing.
