# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Greenmeadow: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor has not turned, it is drained and fully cleaned where the vehicle is in Greenmeadow.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds the motor — but many modern diesels seen around Greenmeadow and Ty Canol carry another fluid as well.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in on every filling station visit, again and again.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think what filler to use.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Greenmeadow: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Beddick, perhaps at Cwrt Henllys Restaurant & Bar on the way home after work.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, be it out in Thornhill or bang in the heart of Greenmeadow.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Greenmeadow forecourt or a driveway over in Forge Hammer, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- The handbook shows where it is if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Cwmbran, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever in Torfaen, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Edinburgh Close.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Greenmeadow?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at Colley Motor Group, Sainsbury's or any forecourt will normally help pushing your car clear when you ask.

If you're on your own drive around Greenmeadow, leave it where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

Greenmeadow sits under 5 miles from the M4; on it, take the first exit.

Distance counts — a short hop across Greenmeadow is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Newport — so tell us about how far it went.

## Greenmeadow: what happens when our engineers arrive

By the local primary school, close to Fairwater Leisure Centre or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Those replies settle the work and our price, and so our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

More than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears out unaided, however long it is left.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

After that our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we go.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

Assuming won't help at the back of Greenmeadow Community Farm, close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to describe; ring and check.

## Greenmeadow motorists: the short version

Before you pour, read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank after all? Keep it switched off then ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, throughout Torfaen.
