# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Greenstead: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where the car sits in Greenstead, is normally all it takes if found before your motor runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that's how many newer diesels around Greenstead and Crockleford Hill carry, with diesel for the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for each tank.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both side by side under one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## Greenstead: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Clematis Way, perhaps at East Gate Inn on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a strange motor.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, carries on.

It takes a few seconds, whether out in Parsons Heath or bang in the heart of Greenstead.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt around Greenstead or a drive out in Crockleford Heath. A few seconds, no more.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Hythe? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever across Essex, follow this routine.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and never rushed beside Hawthorn Avenue at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- The two under one flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel side is still shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Greenstead: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short list, then. Top of that: your motor remains off.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The attendants at Tesco, BP or another forecourt will usually help pushing your car clear when you ask.

Your own drive in Greenstead is the place it should stay.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then switch off.

On the M11, under 50 miles from Greenstead, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Colchester, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Greenstead.

## When we arrive around Greenstead, what takes place?

Outside Unity Primary Academy, near Elim Church Colchester or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

What fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since the answers decide the work and price.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals corrode, and nothing clears out on its own, however long it is left.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we go, we start it and confirm that it is running properly.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.

## Greenstead and Essex: AdBlue drains across the area

Over CO postcodes, the teams that cover Greenstead — a residential suburb — work the nearby places too, The Hythe and Welshwood Park among them.

A postcode starting CO4 3 gets the van to you fastest.

There's no need to move the car.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Greenstead Evangelical Free Church, a lay-by on the way to Greenstead Park, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Greenstead Library.
