# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Grimes Hill: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Grimes Hill, catching it before the engine runs normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the why it takes place and the how to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Diesel feeds the motor — yet plenty of modern diesels driven about Grimes Hill and Drakes Cross hold another liquid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think what filler it needs.

It is in that gap that the slip lives.

## Grimes Hill: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Burnham Road, or outside The Packhorse on the way home that evening.

New-to-you cars come second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as easily, and after the tip starts, no part halts it.

Whether it happens in Shawbrook or the middle of Grimes Hill, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these first, at a forecourt in Grimes Hill or a driveway over in Inkford. A few seconds, that's all.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Wythall? Ask whoever drove it last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere across Worcestershire, use this routine.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and not rushed beside Hastings Close on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm the diesel filler stayed closed throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Grimes Hill?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting the motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help push your car clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Esso, the JET or anywhere else.

At home around Grimes Hill? Then your car remains where it is.

Where the motor has been run already, stop safely then switch the car off.

The next junction means where to come off when you are on the M42, under 3 miles from Grimes Hill.

A short hop across Grimes Hill is a smaller job than a run towards Birmingham, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Grimes Hill: what happens when our engineers turn up

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Hollywood Christian Life Centre, or by Meadow Green Primary School.

Those answers settle the work and the quote, and so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

No one heads out before you have had our quote by phone.

Then that tank is drained and your system rinsed thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of it clears away unaided, however long it sits.

Once your filter is flushed — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your vehicle is tested.

Your engine is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs properly, all before we go.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

Fastest of all: quote a B47 6 postcode for the van.

Moving the car is not needed.

The drain takes place right there, whether a driveway, a street near Woodrush Sports Centre, or a lay-by on the way to Harmony Wood.

Tricky to explain, like the back of St Mary's? Close to a county line? Checking is better than guessing, so phone.
