# Grove Green: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where the vehicle sits in Grove Green, is usually all it takes if found before your engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of newer diesels driven around Grove Green and Ware Street hold another liquid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in on each filling station call-out, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Grove Green?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Lodge Road, or heading home in the car park outside The Early Bird.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, keeps on.

It's a few seconds, whether in Weavering Street or right in the centre of Grove Green.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Harbourland or a forecourt in Grove Green, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Bearsted? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere it is around Kent — a routine to use.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Granary Close.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- The two under a single flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel side is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Finish once the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly using the own spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Grove Green?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the motor.

Keep the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at the nearest petrol station, Texaco or another forecourt will normally help pushing the vehicle clear if you ask.

Your own drive in Grove Green is where it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M20, under a mile from Grove Green, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Grove Green is a smaller job than a run towards Southend-on-Sea, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival around Grove Green, and what happens next

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near Weavering Village Hall, or by Maidstone, St John's Church of England Primary School.

Both the work and the quote depend on three answers — what liquid, which quantity, and if it's run — so our technicians ask.

The price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes away on its own, however long it is left.

After your filter is cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel is added, and then your car gets tested.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
