# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Grove Heath

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your motor off and keep the ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

The trouble starts once it is sucked through the lines — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your car stands around Grove Heath.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Grove Heath: the first few minutes

To do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull your keys out.

- If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- Which product, and about how much volume? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians can know.

- Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting GU23 6, or just the name of a street nearby, so phone from the car.

Not to do:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- Switching the key to ignition alone sets your pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way along Heathrise.

- No draining it yourself, either, at the roadside.

Rolling your car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Grove Heath forecourt you're on, the BP or any other.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

From a dedicated reservoir it is fed directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine emits.

Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

A car filled on a drive in Send yesterday evening and not started since is the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when the motor runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it eats at certain metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

If the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it till morning in Grove Heath makes it worse. In the tank only, time does nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Shell, and this issue is diluted fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it's in that tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid.

It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Whether the car sits in Pyrford Village or the heart of Grove Heath, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush counts for more. Why: it won't stay blended, so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the next tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Surrey the car is standing.

## Grove Heath: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many cars put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap, and after dark the two can look the same. Nobody means it.

It usually takes place at home, from a bottle bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Send CofE Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up your car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Grove Heath Road.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car after dark, parked in the car park outside The Jovial Sailor.

The least familiar cars see it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company cars, and the other car in a home with both fuels.

Leave it switched off: that is the first step to an identical slip, anywhere in Grove Heath or the rest of Surrey you happen to be.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Grove Heath?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

The fuel filter and lines have had it sucked through, and some running time carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Oldlands Copse or halfway across Grove Heath.

No starting it again to check: stop once it is safe, then turn it off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M25, under 3 miles from Grove Heath, at the next junction and stop safely, rather than carrying on.

Hopping across Grove Heath to the car park by Ripley Village Hall is one thing; driving towards Westminster, under 25 miles away, is something else, since each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop.

If it is noticed soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Grove Heath

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Grove Heath: a side street near Send and Ripley History Society Museum, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the job, and so first our technicians ask which fluid got in, roughly the amount, plus whether the engine has run.

On the spot, that tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is cleaned right through because what remains will not flush out by itself.

A test of the car follows at the end, after clean diesel is added and the filter gets flushed or, where necessary, swapped.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the final step.

Starting the car comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, outside Clandon or on a drive in Grove Heath.

Before we leave, our technicians make sure it's running properly with fresh diesel in.

We do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

Assuming doesn't help close to a county line or anywhere hard to describe; ring and ask.

No towing is needed. In Grove Heath, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: the car is drained where it stands, be it on a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Grove Heath: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, so no fixed quote is fair.

What shifts the cost is, first, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St Mary's Church.

That is why each call from Grove Heath starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run.

The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Our price is given on the call, before a van sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## In Grove Heath and still next to your car?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Grove Heath or anywhere in Surrey.
