# Guisborough: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the motor.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; damage only comes when the pump begins drawing it.

Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Guisborough.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Guisborough: the first few minutes

To do:

- Take your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring just where you are. Say a TS14 6 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Things not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll the car: your engine remains off.

- Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, so leave the car off.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.

- Even a short distance along Church Street is too far to drive it.

- Beside the road, do not attempt draining it on your own.

At a forecourt in Guisborough, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle clear of the pump.

On that drive, the vehicle remains exactly where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

It doesn't combine. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

A vehicle filled on a drive in Slapewath yesterday evening and not started since is the straightforward one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once your motor turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out.

If the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it till morning around Guisborough leaves things worse. In the tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Shell.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside that tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

Whether the vehicle sits in Pinchinthorpe or the heart of Guisborough, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other error, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere across North Yorkshire your vehicle sits.

## Guisborough: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors sits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Usually it is not the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle driving home and tips it in outside the house.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Chaloner Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Westgate.

Or a driver new to that flap tops up your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by The Fox Inn.

It occurs most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever in North Yorkshire, Guisborough as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it switched off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Guisborough, and the motor started?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Perhaps coming back from Priory Gardens, or midway across Guisborough, your motor may go rough, smoke, lose pace, flash the dash or stall.

No restarting to check: pull over once safe, then turn it off.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Exit the A1(M), under 25 miles from Guisborough, at the first junction and park somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Guisborough to the car park by Guisborough War Memorial is a very different job from a run towards Durham, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the motor has been running.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it is caught early.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Guisborough: what it takes

A street beside St Nicholas, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever the vehicle has come to rest around Guisborough, our technicians travel to it.

Three replies shape the work, so before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, about what quantity, and whether your motor has turned over.

Then the tank is cleared where the car sits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

After that, the filter: cleaned, or changed if it has to be. Then clean diesel, then a check of your car.

Not run? Then count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes last.

You drive off as soon as our technicians have started it, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Guisborough or in a space at Marske.

It's tested on clean diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before we head off.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## Guisborough and North Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs in Guisborough are passed to vans that cover the towns around it — Hutton Gate, Hutton Village plus Dunsdale — and most of North Yorkshire beyond, throughout TS postcodes.

Guessing doesn't help by a county line or somewhere tricky to pin down; phone and ask.

No towing is needed. In Guisborough, a riverside town, a van that comes to you fits: your car is emptied where it stands, be it in a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

## Guisborough: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the jobs vary, a flat price wouldn't be honest.

Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind Gisborough Priory.

What was put in, what quantity, plus if it ran: each Guisborough enquiry opens by asking precisely those, ahead of any quote, not after.

Once those are answered, a range turns into one firm number.

Before anyone sets off, you hear the price by phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

Check your insurance while we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Still beside the car in Guisborough?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus if the engine ran is everything we ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder across North Yorkshire, Guisborough included.
