# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Gunsgreen: Why It Occurs

Leave the engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, when your engine has not run, it is drained and thoroughly flushed where your car sits in Gunsgreen.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many newer diesels around Ayton, as well as Gunsgreen, run on two liquids; your motor takes only the diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Gunsgreen?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Queen's Road, or heading home in the car park outside The Contented Sole.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

No part stops the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Eyemouth or the middle of Gunsgreen, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these first, at a forecourt around Gunsgreen or a driveway over in St Abbs. A few seconds, that's all.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Reston.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere around Scottish Borders the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of The Avenue, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- The two under one flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel filler is still closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five altogether.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Gunsgreen?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Scotish Fuels, Esso or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the car clear if asked.

On your own drive in Gunsgreen? Then your car stays put.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Gunsgreen sits under 50 miles from the M8; on it, take the next exit.

A short hop across Gunsgreen is a smaller job than a run towards Edinburgh, under 50 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when we arrive around Gunsgreen

Wherever the car has stopped, whether by the local primary school, beside Eyemouth Parish Church or at home, the van comes to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because the replies decide the work and our quote.

No one heads out before you have had the price by phone.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and none of it clears away unaided, however long it is left.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or replaced, where required — clean diesel is added, and finally your car is tested.

After that we start the engine and make sure it runs correctly before we leave.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

No need to move the vehicle.

Draining happens on the spot, be it a driveway, a road near Eyemouth united congregational church, or a layby towards Eyemouth Golf Club.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Eyemouth Community Centre, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## Gunsgreen motorists: the short version

Pour no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave it off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere around Scottish Borders.
