# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Gwyddon? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and the ignition as well.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; damage just comes once your pump begins drawing it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Gwyddon, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has been run.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Gwyddon: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NP11 5, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Shifting your vehicle even a short way is no reason to fire up the motor.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Pouring in more diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.

- Even a short way up Upper Gwyddon Road is too far to drive it.

- Beside the road, don't attempt emptying it on your own.

Moving the car off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Gwyddon forecourt you're on, the Texaco included.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in West End last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

It eats at some metals used in fuel components, working on any part it reaches till it is removed from your system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it overnight around Gwyddon leaves things worse. Inside your tank alone, time does nothing.

The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Sainsbury's and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Blended through your diesel and sitting still, it's no threat at that stage; running the motor does the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, because it separates back out — and the following fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Gwyddon or out in Celynen, does more harm than nearly any other error.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Never started? Then the AdBlue sits just inside that tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to clear, wherever your car has come to rest across Caerphilly.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Gwyddon?

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap — may appear the same. No one intends it; plenty of layouts allow it.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle.

A driver tips the container in outside their house, just off Gwyddon Road, as the day ends.

Otherwise, after dark outside Market Tavern, the vehicle gets refilled by a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least known vehicles see it most — hire cars, new ones, company ones, and the other car in a family with both fuels.

Wherever you're in Gwyddon or the remainder of Caerphilly, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Gwyddon?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

Through the filter, along the pipework, and — given any running time — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's where it has gone.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might show up, maybe part way across Gwyddon or coming back from Cwmcarn Memorial Gardens.

Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Leave it off rather than restarting it to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M4, under 10 miles from Gwyddon, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across Gwyddon to the car park by Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Chapel is one matter; heading towards Newport, under 10 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to rinse out once the engine has run, and we do all of it where the car has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it is noticed soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Gwyddon?

Wherever it has stopped around Gwyddon — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road by St Luke's Church — our van travels to the vehicle.

Three answers shape the job, so first our engineers ask which fluid got in, about what quantity, and whether your motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together after your tank is emptied, right there.

What remains from AdBlue will not flush away by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more with urea than with petrol.

Clean diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that your car is tested.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the final step.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, by Newbridge or on a drive around Gwyddon.

Our engineers check it runs correctly on fresh diesel before we leave.

Because the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

At the end, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

Gwyddon sits at an elevation of 126 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Gwyddon is located near the cities of Newport and Cardiff, and is close to nearby places such as Llanfach and Abercarn.

## Gwyddon and Caerphilly: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout the NP postcode area, the vans answering AdBlue call-outs in Gwyddon reach much of Caerphilly too, Llanfach, Abercarn and Persondy among them.

Guessing won't help by a border or anywhere hard to describe; ring and ask.

Gwyddon is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Gwyddon?

Because the callouts differ, a single figure wouldn't be honest.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Abercarn Library.

That's why every call from Gwyddon starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

Given those replies, a range narrows to one firm figure.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Look at your insurance while we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Still beside your car around Gwyddon?

In that case, do nothing — that's the best step there is.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Say it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, across Gwyddon or anywhere within Caerphilly.
