# Hackney Central: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts once the pump begins pulling it.

In Hackney Central, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hackney Central

Do these:

- So nobody can switch your ignition on, pull the keys away.

- If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting E8 3, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Do not do these:

- Don't start your motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- The ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't weaken it.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance down Richmond Road.

- Beside the road, don't try draining it yourself.

The attendants working at any Hackney Central filling station — the Valero included — will normally help pushing it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to treat the gases.

Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel.

The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Cambridge Heath last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there.

A vehicle left sitting around Hackney Central with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

An issue of thin fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the BP.

Blended into your diesel and left still, it's harmless for now; using the engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Whether the car is in Kingsland or the centre of Hackney Central, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts more. Why: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the following fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Greater London the car is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Hackney Central

Many vehicles put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two can appear the same. No one means it.

It mostly happens outside the house, from a container bought on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Gayhurst Community School.

Near Reading Lane, someone pours a container in at home after work.

One more version: dim light, the car park by Pub on the Park, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

The least known cars get it most — rentals, new ones, company cars, and the other vehicle in a home with one of each fuels.

Wherever you are in Hackney Central or the remainder of Greater London, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hackney Central?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Your filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and any running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Expect rough running, smoke, falling power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — returning from London Fields Tennis Courts, say, or midway across Hackney Central.

When you safely can, pull over then turn it off — with no turning it on again to see.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M11, under 10 miles from Hackney Central, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Hackney Central to the car park by London Fields Lido is a very different job from a run towards London, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once the engine has been run, and our technicians do all of it where your car has stopped.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it is spotted early.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Hackney Central

Anywhere it has come to rest around Hackney Central — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street by Moreland Estate Community Hall — the van travels to your car.

The work rests on three replies, which our engineers get before all else — which fluid went in, the quantity, and if your motor has run.

Next, draining your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

Residue from AdBlue won't wash away unaided, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than for petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers get there, if the motor hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the final step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, outside London Fields or on a drive in Hackney Central.

It's checked on new diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before we go.

No garage is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## AdBlue drains across Greater London, Hackney Central included

Our vans that answer AdBlue call-outs around Hackney Central also cover the locations around it, Hackney, Dalston and South Hackney among them, and most of Greater London beyond, across the E postcode area.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

Anywhere your vehicle sits — a drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — we drain it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits Hackney Central, a residential suburb, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Hackney Central

There's no fair single quote, since the jobs are not the same.

What moves the price is, firstly, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Les Fêtes Galantes.

For that in mind, every call from Hackney Central opens with the same trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, if it ran — before a figure.

Given them, a range shrinks to one firm number.

Before a van heads out, you hear the price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

Check your insurance while we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Still alongside the vehicle around Hackney Central?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to leave it.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and whether the engine ran is all we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across Greater London, Hackney Central too.
