# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hadlow Stair: Why It Happens

Stop reading a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out right where your car stands around Hadlow Stair, is normally all it takes when caught before the motor runs.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Not one liquid but two: that's what many modern diesels near Hadlow Stair and Cage Green run, with diesel feeding your motor.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

There's a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Hadlow Stair

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Hadlow Stair, or on the way home in the car park outside Carpenters Arms.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Hadlow Stair or out in Higham Wood.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in The Park or a forecourt in Hadlow Stair.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Tonbridge, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Kent that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Gilwell Close, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hadlow Stair already?

Short order, then. First: the motor stays unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — so keep it off.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base rather than mixing — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Three Elm Service Station, the Shell or somewhere else.

If you're on your own drive in Hadlow Stair, leave the car where it sits.

Already started? Pull over when it is sensible, then turn off.

Leave the M26 — under 10 miles out of Hadlow Stair — at the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards London, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hadlow Stair.

## Hadlow Stair: what takes place when our technicians get there

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near St Andrew, or outside Woodlands Primary School.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — which liquid, which amount, and if it's run — so we ask.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of the car.

Next our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly before leaving.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting TN10 4.

Your car does not need to move.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Scotch's Field, a side street near Higham Wood Methodist Church: our engineers drain it where it sits.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of St. Philip, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## For Hadlow Stair drivers, the short version

Tip nothing until you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere around Kent.
