# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hakin: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Keep your motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, when your motor has not run, it is drained and thoroughly flushed where your car is in Hakin.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Not one liquid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Hakin and Pill carry, with diesel for your motor.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens in Hakin

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Upper Hill Street, or outside Heart of Oak on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar motors are next, too. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once begun, carries on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Hakin or out in Hubberston.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these first, at a forecourt in Hakin or a drive over in Priory. A few seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- The handbook shows which it is when the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Milford Haven, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever in Pembrokeshire, use this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of The Rope Walk.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Skip step five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Hakin?

Brief list, then. First: your motor remains unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Tesco or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Hakin.

When your engine has been run already, stop safely then switch it off.

Hakin lies under 50 miles from the M4; on it, use the next exit.

A short hop across Hakin is a smaller job than a run towards St Davids, under 15 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians arrive around Hakin, what occurs?

Wherever your car came to rest, whether by the local primary school, near Milford Haven Library and Information Centre or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since the answers decide this work and our quote.

The price is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is cleared.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away by itself. Hence it counts more.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

After that we start the car and confirm it runs properly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once we arrive, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

Shifting your car isn't necessary.
