# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hales Place: Why It Occurs

Pause reading a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your motor has not run, it is drained and fully purged where the car is around Hales Place.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of current diesels on the roads around Hales Place and Canterbury carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

There's a filler on every tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each filling station visit, again and again.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which cap to use.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Hales Place: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Tyler Close before work, or in the car park outside Ye Olde Beverlie on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

Nothing stops the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

St Stephens or the heart of Hales Place: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Tyler Hill or a forecourt around Hales Place, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say where.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Canterbury West's car park, say — not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Kent that is.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of St. Stephen's Hill.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have found your filler and read the cap.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently using its built-in spout.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip step five altogether.

## Hales Place: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The attendants at Esso, Asda or any forecourt will usually help to push the vehicle away when you ask.

Your own drive in Hales Place is the place it stays.

When your motor has been run by now, pull over safely then switch it off.

Hales Place sits under 10 miles from the M2; there, take the first exit.

A short hop across Hales Place is a smaller job than a run towards Canterbury, under a mile away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Hales Place: what happens when our engineers get there

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Stephen's Junior School, close to St Stephen's Church Hall or on your own driveway.

Which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask since the answers set both work and quote.

On the phone call itself, you hear the price — before dispatch.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes out unaided, no matter how long it is left.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before we go, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it is running properly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our technicians arrive, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
