# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hallowes

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Hallowes.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels in Snape Hill, like those in Hallowes, run on two fluids; the engine takes only your diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the fumes.

There's a filler on each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hallowes: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things coming up together.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Longacre Road, perhaps outside Hyde Park Inn on the way home after work.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as easily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

Whether it occurs in Hill Top or the middle of Hallowes, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Summerwood Top or a forecourt around Hallowes.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- On many vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark what belongs in which filler right there.

- The handbook says which it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — at Dronfield's car park, say — not once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever around Derbyshire, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Salisbury Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Both under one flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel filler stays shut before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Stage five is off limits.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Hallowes?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Sainsbury's or the JET, ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Hallowes.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next junction is the place to leave when you're on the M1, under 10 miles from Hallowes.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Hallowes is less work than a trip of under 10 miles towards Sheffield, and so tell us.

## When we turn up around Hallowes, what occurs?

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Dronfield Infant School, near The Forge or on your own drive.

We ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run, since the answers decide this work and the quote.

That price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. That is why it counts more.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Next our engineers start the engine and check it runs smoothly before we go.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run take about half an hour after our technicians are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

A postcode starting S18 1 gets the van to you fastest.

Moving your car is not needed.

Draining happens on the spot, be it a drive, a road near St John the Baptist, or a layby on the way to Hilltop Playing Field.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Dronfield Sports Centre? By a county line? Checking beats assuming, and so phone.

## In short, for Hallowes motorists

Tip nothing until you've read the cap.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can drain it wherever it stands, wherever across Derbyshire: switch the vehicle off and ring 0333 366 0103.
