# Hamlet: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Hamlet, finding it before the motor turns usually leaves draining and a full flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel feeds the motor — yet many newer diesels seen about Hamlet and Littletown hold a second liquid as well.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on each forecourt call-out, again and again.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the error lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hamlet: how it occurs

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Hayne Lane before work, or in the car park at The Otter Inn on the way home.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It's seconds, be it out in Weston or right in the heart of Hamlet.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Hamlet or a drive out in Gittisham. Seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside your diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you collect a rental or fleet car — from Honiton's car park, say — rather than once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever around Devon, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of A30, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- The two behind one flap? So make sure the cap on your diesel side stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Stop when the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently using the own spout.

- Close the cap, and check again — making sure your diesel cap stayed shut the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Step five stays out.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Hamlet?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — BP, Tesco or another — the attendants will usually help push the car clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Hamlet.

Already run? Stop when it's safe, then turn off.

Hamlet sits under 10 miles from the M5; on it, use the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Hamlet is smaller work than a run of under 15 miles towards Exeter, and so say.

## Our arrival around Hamlet, and what takes place next

Wherever your car has stopped, be it outside Littletown Primary Academy, beside Homemade Guinea Fowl road sign or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three answers — which liquid, what quantity, and if it's run — so we ask.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.

Then your tank is emptied and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of that washes out on its own, however long it is left.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed as needed.

Before we go, we fire it up and confirm that it's running properly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

Hamlet is a residential suburb, and the vans that cover it also work the towns around it, Heathpark and Heathfield Camp among them, across the EX postcode area.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting EX14 3.

The car does not need to shift.

Anywhere it sits — beside Gittisham Roman Fort, on a lay-by en route to Gobsore Farm, at home — that's where it is cleared.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Church of the Holy Family? By a county line? Checking beats guessing, and so ring.
