# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Haregate

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and your ignition too.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The trouble begins once it is pulled through the pump — it will not ignite, and it will not blend with diesel.

In Haregate, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the engine runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Haregate

Things to do:

- So no one can switch the ignition on, take the keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting ST13 6, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Don't:

- No starting the motor — not briefly, not to reposition your vehicle.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.

- Don't drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch up Priory Avenue.

- Do not try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

The staff on duty at any Haregate forecourt — the Esso included — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

Parked on your own drive? Then it remains exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it treats the gas.

No part inside an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to travel that way.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It sinks, since it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the pickup draws its fuel from.

Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Bridge End last night and has not been started since. The AdBlue waits at the base of the tank, untouched — though it would be the first thing through once your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filters and narrow passages; and, because it eats at some metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

Pipes holding AdBlue spell harm by morning for a car sitting in Haregate. Just inside your tank, it stays the same.

The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Sainsbury's, and the issue is diluted fuel.

No damage comes as long as it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only when the motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates back out — and the following tankful won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Haregate or out in Lowe Hill, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Wherever in Staffordshire the vehicle has come to rest, an unrun motor means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.

## Haregate: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and after dark the two can look the same. Nobody means it.

It usually takes place at home, from a container grabbed on the journey home, not at the filling station.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Beresford Memorial CofE First School.

After work, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway close to Churnet View.

Another version: dim light, the car park by Hare & Gate, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are in Haregate or the rest of Staffordshire, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Haregate, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

With any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via your filter and lines.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Ball Haye Green Recreation Ground or halfway across Haregate.

When you safely can, stop then switch everything off — with no restarting to test.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M6, under 15 miles from Haregate, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Hopping across Haregate to the car park by Saint Paul's Church is one thing; heading for Stoke-on-Trent, under 10 miles away, is another, because each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the engine has been started.

Permanent damage is very unusual if it's noticed soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Haregate?

A street beside Kingdom Hall, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Haregate, our engineers come to it.

Three answers shape the job, so before anything else our technicians ask which fluid went in, about what quantity, plus whether your motor has turned over.

Then that tank is emptied where the vehicle waits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because what remains won't wash away by itself.

A test of the car follows last, once clean diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, if needed, swapped.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when the engine has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Finally, the fuel system is bled with new diesel.

You drive off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Haregate or in a space at Congleton.

The test before our technicians head off is that it runs properly on new diesel.

Our technicians do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

Haregate is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Staffordshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and a population of around 3797 residents. Haregate sits at an elevation of 208 metres, near the towns of Leek and Ball Haye Green, and is approximately 9.3 miles from Stoke-on-Trent. Haregate is located in the West Midlands region, about 136.7 miles northwest of London.

## AdBlue drains across Haregate and Staffordshire

AdBlue call-outs around Haregate go to teams that cover the towns near it — Ball Haye Green, Leek plus Abbey Green — and much of Staffordshire beyond, throughout ST postcodes.

Guessing won't help by a county line or anywhere tricky to pin down; ring and check.

A van that comes to you fits Haregate, a residential suburb: there's no need to take the vehicle to us, since we drain it there, on a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Haregate?

Since the callouts vary, a single price wouldn't be honest.

Three things change the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind Brough Park Leisure Centre.

That's why each call from Haregate starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run.

Once they are answered, a range turns into one fixed number.

Before a van heads out, you hear our quote by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.

## Still next to the car in Haregate?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, right now, the best move open to you.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, in Haregate or wherever within Staffordshire, after you phone 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether it ran.
