# Harvel: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and no harm starts till your engine sucks it through.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your car sits in Harvel.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Harvel

Do these:

- Pull your keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.

- Put your hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting DA13 0, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

- Moving the car just a short way is no reason to fire up the engine.

- The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it's wasted.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch along St Francis Road.

- Do not try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

Get the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the pumps if you're at a forecourt around Harvel, whether it is the Texaco or elsewhere.

At your own drive, do not move it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

No part in an injection pump is made for this liquid — and none of it was intended to travel that way.

It does not blend. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

The pickup takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in South Street last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, untouched — though it would be the first thing through if the motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there.

Lines carrying AdBlue spell damage by morning for a vehicle parked around Harvel. Only in that tank, it stays the same.

Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, which is a separate kind of harm.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more significant than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol at the Shell.

Blended through your diesel and sitting unused, it is harmless at that stage; using the engine does the harm.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid.

It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Culverstone Green or the middle of Harvel.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Not run? Then the AdBlue sits only inside the tank, the simplest section of the entire system to clear, anywhere the vehicle has stopped in Kent.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Harvel

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Usually it is never the filling station: a driver picks up a container heading home and pours it in at home.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Culverstone Green Primary School the top-up is hurried.

Near Harvel Lane, someone tips a bottle in on that drive in the evening.

Another version: dim light, a pub car park outside the pub in the village, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

It takes place most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Same slip, same first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Harvel or the rest of Kent.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Harvel?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Through your filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that is where it travels.

You may see your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Vigo Rugby Club or halfway across Harvel.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Exit the M20, under 3 miles from Harvel, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Harvel to the car park by Hodsoll Street & Tridley Village Hall is a very different job from a run towards Southend-on-Sea, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it's caught early.

## Harvel: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A street beside Harvel Cricket Club, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere the car has come to rest in Harvel, our engineers come to it.

Before anything else we ask what went in, about how much, and if your engine has been run, since those replies decide this work.

Then your tank is cleared where the car sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through since what remains won't wash away unaided.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Lastly, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel.

You set off as soon as we have started it, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around Harvel or in a space outside Sole Street.

It's checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before we go.

No workshop is required at any point, with the entire job done then and there.

Afterwards, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

## AdBlue drains across Kent, Harvel included

AdBlue call-outs around Harvel go to teams that serve the towns around it — Priestwood Green, Priestwood plus David Street — and much of Kent further out, throughout DA postcodes.

Phone and check rather than guess if you are by a county line, or anywhere awkward to explain.

Harvel is a rural village, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Harvel?

Since each callouts differ, a flat figure would not be fair.

What shifts the price is, first, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Vigo RFC.

What went in, what quantity, and whether the engine ran: each Harvel call opens with precisely that, before any quote, never after.

When those are answered, a range turns into one fixed figure.

The price is quoted during the call, before anyone leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Still beside the car around Harvel?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus whether it ran are everything we ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across Kent, Harvel too.
