# Hasbury: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Hasbury.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the engine — yet many modern diesels driven about Hasbury and Hayley Green hold a second fluid too.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh them, from its own tank.

There is a filler on every tank.

Many of cars have a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hasbury: how it takes place

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Elizabeth Road before work, or in the car park outside The Hunting Tree on the way home.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

No part stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Halesowen or the middle of Hasbury, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these first, at a forecourt in Hasbury or a drive over in Lutley. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — many cars show which goes in each inlet right there.

- The handbook says which it is when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Old Hill? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever across West Midlands the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of High Farm Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Hasbury?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at BP, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle clear if you ask.

Your own drive around Hasbury is the place it stays.

Already run? Stop when it's sensible, then switch off.

On the M5, under 3 miles from Hasbury, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Hasbury is a smaller job than a run towards Birmingham, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Hasbury: what takes place when our engineers turn up

The van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near Hasbury Methodist Church, or outside St Margaret's At Hasbury CofE Primary School.

What fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because those replies set both work and quote.

You get that price by phone, before anyone sets off.

Then the tank is emptied and the system purged thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

The engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers leave.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.
