# Hasland: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause reading for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the motor has not run, it's drained and fully flushed where your car is around Hasland.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it happens and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Hasland and Hady run, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

It is in that gap that the error lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around Hasland

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Hampton Street, perhaps outside Devonshire Arms on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Hasland or out in Winsick.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Birdholme or a forecourt around Hasland.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Chesterfield, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere across Derbyshire, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Storforth Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour slowly using its own spout.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Never go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Hasland?

Don't start your engine: that's how the short order of things starts.

Keep the ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on alone starts your fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, just where fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help push your car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the BP, the Esso or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive in Hasland, leave the car where it stands.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then turn off.

Hasland sits under 5 miles from the M1; there, take the next junction.

A short hop across Hasland is a smaller job than a run towards Sheffield, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Hasland: what occurs when our technicians get there

Anywhere your car came to rest, whether by Hasland Infant School, near The Playhouse or at home, the van comes to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — which fluid, which amount, and if it's run — so our technicians ask.

On the call itself, you hear our price — before anything else.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Once the filter has been cleaned — or replaced, where required — fresh diesel goes in, and then your car is tested.

After that our technicians start the engine and make sure it runs correctly before leaving.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour after our engineers are there.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It is worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## Hasland and Derbyshire: AdBlue drains across the area

As a residential suburb, Hasland has the same vans as nearby areas — Spital, St Augustines — all the way through S postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

A postcode starting S41 0 gets our van to you fastest.

Your car stays where it is.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Hasland Methodist Church, a lay-by on the way to Eastwood Park, a driveway.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Hasland Baptist Church? Close to a county line? Asking beats assuming, and so phone.

## The short version for Hasland drivers

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Derbyshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
