# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Haslington

Pause reading a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Haslington.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it happens and the how to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels in Sydney, as well as Haslington, run on two liquids; the engine gets just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Haslington: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Druitt Court before work, or in the car park outside The Broughton Arms heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: an unfamiliar car.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, be it in Slaughter Hill or bang in the centre of Haslington.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Wheelock Heath or a forecourt around Haslington.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Crewe.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere it is in Cheshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Crewe Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The two under one flap? So make sure the lid on your diesel filler is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Stop when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Haslington: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at Shell, Esso or any forecourt will usually help to push the vehicle away if asked.

On your own drive around Haslington? So the car stays where it is.

Already started? Stop once it's sensible, then turn off.

On the M6, under 3 miles from Haslington, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Haslington is a smaller job than a run towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we arrive in Haslington, what takes place?

Outside Haslington Primary Academy, close to Parish Church of Saint Matthew or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

The replies decide the work and our price, so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

That price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Then that tank is drained and your system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and then your car is tested.

We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## AdBlue drains about Haslington, and Cheshire beyond

As a village, Haslington shares its vans nearby areas — Crewe Green, Winterley — all the way through CW postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Our van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting CW1 5.

The vehicle remains where it is.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Saint Michael and All Angels, a lay-by on the way to Chatham Way Green, a drive.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Reflections? Close to a county line? Asking is better than guessing, and so phone.

## The short version for Haslington people

Pour no AdBlue till you have read the cap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank after all? Keep the vehicle switched off then call 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, across Cheshire.
