# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hawcoat: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Hawcoat.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it occurs and the how to avoid it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Hawcoat and Beacon Hill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which cap it needs.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Hawcoat

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Dane Avenue, or outside The Strawberry on the way home after work.

New-to-you motors come next, as well. Rentals, new motors and company cars place their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and once the pour starts, nothing stops it.

Whether it takes place in Croslands Park or the middle of Hawcoat, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Hawcoat or a driveway over in Newton. Seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many cars mark which belongs in which inlet right there.

- Can't see it next to your diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say where.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Barrow-In-Furness, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light comes on — anywhere you are around Cumbria — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Whinlatter Drive, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hawcoat already?

Do not start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Asda, ask the staff to help push your car clear of the pump.

On your own drive in Hawcoat? Then your car stays where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M6 — under 25 miles out of Hawcoat — at the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Lancaster, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hawcoat.

## What takes place when our technicians get there around Hawcoat

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, be it by Dane Ghyll Community Primary School and Nursery, beside Barrow Community Gym or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run, since the replies decide the work and the price.

Nobody heads out before you've heard our price over the phone.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out by itself. Hence it counts more.

After the filter has been flushed — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and then your vehicle gets tested.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor has not run need about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
