# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hawley Lane: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down a moment, keep the ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your motor has not turned, it is emptied and fully flushed where the vehicle is in Hawley Lane.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the how to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that is how many modern diesels near Hawley Lane and West Heath carry, with diesel for your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in that gap that the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Hawley Lane?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off West Road, or on the way home in the car park at Hawley Arms.

Unfamiliar cars are next, as well. Hire cars, new motors and company motors place their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

No part stops the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes seconds, whether out in Farnborough Green or bang in the centre of Hawley Lane.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Hawley Lane or a drive out in Cove. A few seconds, no more.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is when your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you pick up a hire car or company car — from Frimley's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, anywhere around Hampshire, follow this routine.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Willow Crescent.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then look once more — making sure your diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Skip stage five altogether.

## Hawley Lane: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start the engine: that's where the short order of things begins.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the Shell, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the pump.

At home in Hawley Lane? So the car stays where it is.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M3, under a mile from Hawley Lane, that means the next junction.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Hawley Lane is a smaller job than heading under 50 miles towards Winchester — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Hawley Lane: what occurs when our technicians arrive

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Cherrywood Road, or outside Farnborough Grange Nursery & Infant Community School.

Both the work and our price depend on three answers — what liquid, what amount, and if it has run — so our engineers ask.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle.

Next we fire it up and check it runs properly before we leave.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run need about half an hour after our technicians arrive.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
