# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hayfield: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the motor hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly cleaned where your car sits around Hayfield.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels in Farlands Booth, as well as Hayfield, carry on two liquids; the motor gets just the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

There's a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Hayfield: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Kinder Road before work, or in the car park at Pack Horse on the way home.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Third, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the pour starts, no part stops it.

Whether it occurs in Highgate or the middle of Hayfield, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt around Hayfield or a drive out in Thornsett. A few seconds, that's all.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- Plenty of motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask as you collect a rental or company car — from New Mills Central's car park, say — rather than once the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light appears — wherever you are in Derbyshire — a routine to use.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Wainhouse Brow.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've located your filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look again — making sure your diesel filler stayed closed throughout. Only then, start the car.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Don't carry on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Hayfield?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

Keep the ignition off as well, since on many diesels it by itself starts your pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Carlton, New Mills Marina Diesel Pump or another — the staff will usually help push the car clear, when you ask.

Your own driveway in Hayfield is the place it should stay.

Where your motor has run by now, pull over safely then switch the vehicle off.

Hayfield lies under 10 miles from the M67; there, take the first junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Hayfield is less work than a trip of under 15 miles to Manchester, so say.

## What happens when our engineers arrive in Hayfield

By Hayfield Primary School, close to Hayfield Village Hall or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since the replies determine the work and the price.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out by itself. Hence it counts more.

Once your filter is cleaned — or renewed, if required — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested.

Your engine is started next and tested to make sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers leave.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## For Hayfield drivers, the short version

Tip nothing until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere across Derbyshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — and so leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103.
