# Head of Muir: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your engine off then leave the ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing starts till the engine sucks it round.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Head of Muir.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do straight away, Head of Muir: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- Which product, and roughly what amount? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we can know.

- Tell us a postcode starting FK6 5, or whichever street is nearest, and the van finds you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Moving your vehicle even a short way is no reason to start the motor.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way up Garvald Road.

- Draining that tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

Rolling the vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Head of Muir forecourt you're on, the Gulf or any other.

On your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — entirely different from fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath the diesel, which is how a car filled in Denny last night and never started remains the simple one, as long as no one turns the key.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

What is left when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it's flushed out.

Overnight, a vehicle parked in Head of Muir with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it is just in that tank, it doesn't.

And there is the water: it offers no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

A fault of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the JET.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting inside that tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Parkfoot or the middle of Head of Muir.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever in Falkirk your car sits.

## Head of Muir: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars rests right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

The refill is hurried outside the local primary school, because the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken in.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Myothill Road.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Crown Hotel, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar cars get it most — hire cars, new ones, company cars, and the other vehicle in a family with one of each fuels.

Same mistake, an identical first response — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be around Head of Muir or the rest of Falkirk.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Head of Muir?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

Via the filter, through the lines, and — given any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that's where it has gone.

Maybe returning from Chacefield Wood, or midway across Head of Muir, the engine may go lumpy, smoke, drop pace, flash your dash or cut out.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave it off rather than restarting it to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M80, under a mile from Head of Muir, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Head of Muir to park near Dennyloanhead Community Hall and a drive of under 10 miles towards Stirling are such separate jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to clean out once the motor has run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has ended up.

When it is spotted quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Head of Muir

Anywhere it has stopped in Head of Muir — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road by Muirhead Memorial Hall — our van travels to the car.

Three answers shape the work, and so first our engineers ask what went in, about what quantity, and if your motor has run.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned all the way through since residue will not flush out by itself.

Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers turn up, provided the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the fuel system with new diesel comes last.

Whether it's a parking bay by Larbert or a driveway around Head of Muir, that is where we fire it up and you head off.

Before leaving, we make sure it's running correctly with clean diesel in.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Head of Muir

Every job is different, and so not one fixed price would be honest.

Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open driveway is easier for a technician to reach safely than a tight space behind Westfield Park.

That's why every call from Head of Muir starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

When those are answered, a range turns into a single firm figure.

Before anyone sets off, you hear our quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Check your insurance while we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
