# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Heasandford

Pause here a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done right where the vehicle stands in Heasandford, is usually what it needs if found before the engine runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it happens and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels around Harle Syke, as well as Heasandford, run on two fluids; your motor gets just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Different tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around Heasandford

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things lining up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Bancroft Road, or at The Queen Victoria on the way home that evening.

New-to-you motors come second, too. Hire cars, new motors and company motors place their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Heasandford or out in Burnley Lane.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Heasandford forecourt or a driveway over in Pike Hill, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On many motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Check for it.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel filler? Then look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask when you collect a hire car or company car — from Burnley Central's car park, say — not when the warning appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere across Lancashire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Eastern Avenue.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The two behind a single flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel side stays shut before raising the bottle.

- Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently through the own spout.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Heasandford: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at Shell, Flogas or any forecourt will normally help pushing your car clear if you ask.

On your own drive around Heasandford? Then the car stays put.

When the motor has been run already, pull over somewhere safe and switch the car off.

On the M65, under 3 miles from Heasandford, that means the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Heasandford.

## Heasandford: what happens when our technicians get there

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Heasandford Primary School, close to Burnley Youth Theatre or on your own drive.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — which liquid, which quantity, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

Nobody sets off until you've heard the price by phone.

Then that tank is drained and the system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

After the fuel filter is cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel is added, and finally your vehicle gets tested.

Your engine is started next and checked to be sure it runs properly, all before our engineers go.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## About Heasandford itself

Heasandford is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the riverside with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Heasandford sits at an elevation of 144 metres, near to other local areas such as Burnley Lane and Fulledge. Heasandford is located close to the larger urban areas of the North West, including Bradford which is 19 miles away. Heasandford has a population of around 4598 people, living in a variety of predominantly terraced homes.

## Heasandford and Lancashire: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout BB postcodes, our vans covering Heasandford — a residential suburb — work the surrounding locations too, Stoneyholme and Fulledge among them.

Quickest of all: give a BB10 2 postcode to our van.

There's no need to move the vehicle.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Thursby Park, a side street close to St Andrew with St Margaret and St James: our technicians drain it where it sits.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of St Cuthbert, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## In short, for Heasandford drivers

Pour no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can drain it wherever it stands, anywhere across Lancashire: keep it off then call 0333 366 0103.
