# Heath End: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where the vehicle sits in Heath End, is usually all it takes if found before your motor runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds the engine — yet plenty of current diesels driven round Heath End and Tadley carry a second fluid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Heath End: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Heath End Road, perhaps outside The Cricketers on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar motors come next, too. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Nothing stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Heath End or out in Baughurst Common.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Baughurst or a forecourt around Heath End, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On plenty of motors, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check when you collect a rental or fleet car — at Midgham's car park, say — not once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere in Hampshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Shyshack Lane, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look again — confirm your diesel filler stayed shut throughout. After that, start your car.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Heath End?

Brief list, then. First: the motor stays unstarted.

Keep your ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs your fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Shell, the Esso or anywhere else.

Your own driveway in Heath End is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Leave the M4 — under 10 miles out of Heath End — at the first exit.

A short hop across Heath End is a smaller job than a run towards Winchester, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our technicians turn up in Heath End

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Burnham Copse Primary School, close to Baughurst Scout & Guide Group or on your own driveway.

The answers determine this work and the price, so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run.

You get that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away unaided. That is why it matters more.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Then our technicians start the engine and make sure it runs correctly before we go.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run take about half an hour once we arrive.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Heath End and Hampshire: AdBlue drains across the area

As a residential suburb, Heath End has the same vans as surrounding places — Haughurst Hill, Inhurst — right across RG postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting RG26 5.

The car doesn't need to shift.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to War Memorial, a lay-by on the way to Three Corner Plantation, a drive.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of St. Michaels Catholic Church.

## For Heath End drivers, the short version

Before you pour, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Hampshire.
