# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Heathhall: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out just where your car sits around Heathhall, is normally all it needs when caught before the motor runs.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many newer diesels around Nunholm, as well as Heathhall, run on two fluids; your engine takes just the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for both, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Heathhall: how it takes place

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Sutherland Way before work, or in the car park at The Lochar Inn on the way home.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part halts the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Heathhall or out in The Grove.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Marchmount or a forecourt around Heathhall.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Dumfries.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere you are across Dumfries and Galloway — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Martinton Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look once more — confirm your diesel filler stayed shut the whole time. Only then, start your car.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Heathhall?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Esso, the another forecourt nearby or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive around Heathhall, leave the car where it is.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Heathhall lies under 10 miles from the A74(M); on it, take the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Carlisle, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Heathhall.

## When our technicians arrive in Heathhall, what occurs?

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to Lochthorne Library or on your own drive.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since the replies settle this work and our quote.

The price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of that washes out on its own, no matter how long it is left.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and check that it is running correctly.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

Draining happens on the spot, whether a driveway, a street by Locharbriggs Community Centre, or a layby on the way to School Wood.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum? By a border? Asking beats assuming, so ring.
