# Hele: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the engine.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

The trouble starts once it's sucked through the pump — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel.

Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Hele.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hele: the first few minutes

Do these:

- Remove your keys, and that prevents anyone turning the electrics on.

- If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Which fluid, and about how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers can see.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting EX34 9, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Do not do these:

- Moving the car just a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the pump.

- Adding more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way down Witheridge Place.

- Do not try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

On a forecourt around Hele, whether it's the Total or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the car clear of the pump.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

Nothing in a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to travel that way.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It sinks, because it's heavier than diesel, and settles down where the intake draws its supply from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Langleigh last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid waits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it will be first through once the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; meanwhile, because it attacks certain metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

By daybreak, a car sitting in Hele with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it is just in the tank, it doesn't.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running through them, so the water part damages them by itself.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Murco and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it's inside your tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It cannot simply be run through, since it does not burn.

Deposits and corrosion stay after the next tankful, and AdBlue separates again out of your diesel, and so thinning it won't work. That is why the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Hagginton Hill or the heart of Hele alike.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

Never run? Then the AdBlue sits only in that tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to empty, wherever the vehicle has come to rest around Devon.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Hele

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Ilfracombe Church of England Junior School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Cat Lane.

Otherwise, after dark outside The Hele Bay, the vehicle gets refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a brand-new vehicle, a fleet vehicle, or the other car of a family with both fuel types — the cars drivers know least.

An identical mistake, an identical first step — keep it switched off — wherever you happen to be around Hele or the rest of Devon.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hele?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

The filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Perhaps coming back from Brimlands, or part way across Hele, your engine may go rough, smoke, lose power, flash the dash or stall.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off instead of testing it again.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Hele sits under 50 miles from the M4; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and stop somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Hele to the car park by Hele Cornmill is a very different job from a run towards Swansea, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it's noticed soon.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Hele: what it takes

Anywhere it has stopped around Hele — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a street by Watersport Hub — our van comes to your vehicle.

What was put in, about the quantity, and if your motor has been run: we check before all else, since those shape the job.

Next, emptying the tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

The system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Clean diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to bleed the system on new diesel.

Whether it's a parking space at Barnstaple or a drive in Hele, that is where our technicians start it and you set off.

The check before our engineers leave is that it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## About Hele, briefly

Hele sits at a low elevation of around 20 metres, close to the sea and within a short distance of other nearby places like Goosewell. Hele has a population of approximately 871 residents, living in predominantly terraced housing.

## AdBlue drains across Devon, Hele included

The vans that answer AdBlue jobs in Hele also cover the places round it, Chambercombe, Ilfracombe and Goosewell among them, and most of Devon beyond, across the EX postcode area.

Close to a border, or somewhere awkward to explain? Asking beats assuming, and so ring.

Hele is a coastal village, and an on-site drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Hele

No flat price would be fair, because each job differs.

Three things move the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight space behind Verity.

That is why every call from Hele starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run.

The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

The quote is quoted during the call, before anyone leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Look at your policy while we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## In Hele and still beside your car?

Not touching your car is, then, the best thing you can do.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, across Hele or anywhere within Devon, once you ring 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and if it ran.
