# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hele

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Hele.

Here before the event? Then the rest covers why it comes about and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels in Plainmoor, as well as Hele, run on two fluids; the engine gets just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Hele

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Hele Road before work, or in the car park at The Old Engine House on the way home.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Combe Pafford or the heart of Hele: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in St Marychurch or a forecourt around Hele.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many motors mark which goes in each inlet just there.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check as you pick up a rental or company car — at Torre's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, wherever in Devon, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Barton Hill Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays out.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hele?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting the motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Esso, Shell or another — the staff will normally help roll the car clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Hele.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction is where to come off if you are on the M5, under 15 miles from Hele.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Exeter, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hele.

## When our engineers get there around Hele, what occurs?

Our van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside Acorn Centre, or outside Lift Barton Hill.

The replies decide the work and our price, and so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

No one heads out until you have heard our quote by phone.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

The engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs properly, all before we leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our technicians arrive, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## AdBlue drains round Hele, and Devon beyond

Throughout TQ postcodes, the vans that cover Hele — a residential suburb — work the nearby locations too, Upton and Barton included.

Give a postcode that starts TQ2 7, and our van arrives fastest.

No need to move the car.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Windmill Hill Recreation Ground, a side street near Saint Martin of Tours Church of England Parish Church: our engineers drain it where it is.

Awkward to explain, like the back of County Court? Close to a county line? Asking is better than assuming, and so phone.

## The short version for Hele people

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across Devon, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — and so leave it off then call 0333 366 0103.
