# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hele: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

Leave the engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out right where the vehicle sits in Hele, is normally what it needs when caught before your engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Not one liquid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels near Hele and Watergore carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Hele?

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off St Elizabeths Way, or at Brewers Arms on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a new motor.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once started, keeps on.

South Petherton or the heart of Hele: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Yeabridge or a forecourt in Hele, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- On many vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many vehicles show what goes in each filler just there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you collect a hire car or company car — from Crewkerne's car park, say — rather than once the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere around Somerset the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of South Street, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Hele?

Short order, then. Top of it: your engine remains off.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the BP, ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

At home in Hele? So the vehicle stays put.

Where your motor has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe and turn it off.

On the M5, under 15 miles from Hele, that means the next junction.

Distance counts — a short hop across Hele makes a smaller job than heading under 25 miles to Wells — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What happens when our technicians get there around Hele

Our van reaches your car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near South Petherton Library, or by South Petherton Church of England Infants and Pre School.

Those replies settle the work and the quote, so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run.

No one sets off before you have heard our quote by phone.

Then that tank is cleared and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and then your car gets tested.

Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it is running smoothly.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor has not run take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

Wherever it stands — near The David Hall, in a layby heading to School Sports Field, on a drive — that's where it is drained.

Awkward to explain, like the back of St Peter & St Paul? Close to a county line? Asking beats assuming, so phone.

## Hele people: the short version

Tip nothing till you have read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave the vehicle switched off then phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, across Somerset.
