# Hellifield: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done right where your vehicle sits in Hellifield, is normally all it takes if caught before the motor runs.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many newer diesels around Halton West, as well as Hellifield, carry on two liquids; the engine takes only the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for the two, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which filler it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hellifield: how it takes place

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Gisburn Road, or on the way home in the car park at Hellifield Social Club.

New-to-you cars come next, too. Rentals, new cars and company motors place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and once the pour begins, no part stops it.

Whether it takes place in Hellifield Green or the middle of Hellifield, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt in Hellifield or a driveway over in Long Preston. Seconds, that's all.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles mark what belongs in which filler right there.

- Can't see it beside your diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside the nearest station? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere across North Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and never rushed by Hammerton Drive on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Hellifield?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the vehicle clear when you ask.

On your own drive around Hellifield? Then the car stays put.

When your motor has run by now, stop somewhere safe and turn the vehicle off.

The next exit means the place to come off if you're on the M65, under 15 miles from Hellifield.

A short hop across Hellifield is a smaller job than a run towards Lancaster, under 25 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## When we turn up in Hellifield, what takes place?

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Hellifield Community Primary School, near Hellifield Institute or on your own driveway.

Our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run, since those answers decide this work and the quote.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Then your tank is drained and your system purged thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away by itself. Hence it matters more.

After your filter has been flushed — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and finally the car gets tested.

Your engine is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before we head off.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

Shifting the vehicle is not necessary.

Assuming doesn't help at the back of Hellifield Methodist Church, on a boundary, or anywhere awkward to describe; phone and check.
