# Helpringham: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, keep your ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Helpringham, finding it before your engine turns usually means a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads round Helpringham and Burton Pedwardine carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to clean them, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## Helpringham: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off High Street, or outside The Nag's Head on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar motors come second, too. Hire cars, new cars and company motors place their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the pour starts, nothing stops it.

Whether it takes place in Thorpe Latimer or the middle of Helpringham, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Helpringham or a driveway out in Heckington. A few seconds, no more.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Heckington? Ask the person who drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever across Lincolnshire, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of The Green.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Helpringham?

Short order, then. Top of that: your engine stays unstarted.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the JET or the Shell, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Helpringham.

When the motor has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then switch the vehicle off.

Come off the Great North Road — under 50 miles out of Helpringham — at the first junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Helpringham is less work than a trip of under 25 miles towards Lincoln, and so say.

## When our technicians turn up in Helpringham, what occurs?

Anywhere your car came to rest, be it by Helpringham Primary Academy, beside War Memorial or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

What fluid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because the answers set both work and price.

That quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a test of the car.

Next our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run take about half an hour after our technicians arrive.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## Helpringham and Lincolnshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Little Hale and Great Hale are among the places near Helpringham, a rural village, that the same vans cover, throughout NG postcodes.

A postcode starting NG34 0 gets the van to you fastest.

No need to move the vehicle.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Swaton Wood, a side street close to Helpringham Chapel: we drain the vehicle where it is.

Awkward to explain, like the back of St Andrew's? Close to a county line? Asking beats assuming, so ring.

## The short version for Helpringham people

Before you pour, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere around Lincolnshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave it off then ring 0333 366 0103.
