# Hemsby: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and the ignition too.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

The harm starts once it is pulled through your lines — it will not burn, and it will not blend with diesel.

Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Hemsby.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hemsby

Do these:

- Pocket the keys, and that stops anyone turning the power on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the quantity, and so don't throw it out.

- Give us a postcode starting NR29 4, or whichever street is nearest, and the van reaches you directly — so ring from wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: the motor stays off.

- Turning your key to ignition by itself starts your pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, so it is wasted.

- Even a short distance up North Road is too far to drive the car.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Moving your vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Hemsby forecourt you are on, the JET or any other.

At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It does not blend. After it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Scratby last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the base of the tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through if the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Once it is sucked in, the damage takes two forms.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out.

A car left standing in Hemsby with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Then there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it most — the injection pump and each injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that is the main fault.

Mixed into the diesel and sitting unused, it is no threat at that stage; using the engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Crystals and corrosion remain through the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back from the diesel, so watering it can't work. Hence the flush matters so much, and trying the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly any other mistake — in Ormesby St Margaret or the centre of Hemsby equally.

As with petrol, there's good news.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Norfolk the car is sitting.

## Hemsby: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. Nobody means it.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Rushing, outside Hemsby Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills your car.

A driver pours the container in outside their house, just off Kingsway, as the day ends.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the car after dark, stopped in the car park outside Kings Head.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a company vehicle, or the other motor in a home with both fuel types — the vehicles people know the least.

Wherever around Norfolk, Hemsby included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it off.

## Hemsby: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

It's been sucked through the fuel filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

Perhaps returning from Duffles Pond Community Wildlife Area, or midway across Hemsby, the engine may run lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or stall.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep the car off instead of testing it again.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M11, over 50 miles from Hemsby, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Hemsby to the car park by Saint Mary the Virgin is a very different job from a run towards Norwich, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the motor has been running.

Spotted early, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Hemsby?

The vehicle stays put, whether that's a street beside Hemsby Village Sign, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Hemsby, and our van travels to it.

Before anything else we ask what went in, about how much, and if your engine has been run, because those replies determine this work.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned all the way through since what remains won't wash out by itself.

Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, provided your engine hasn't run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no issue, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the final step.

At that point our technicians fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay outside Great Yarmouth or a drive around Hemsby.

It's checked on fresh diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we go.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## About Hemsby and where it is

Hemsby is a coastal village in Norfolk, situated near the towns of Newport and Winterton-on-Sea, with Hemsby being a popular residential area due to its detached housing stock. Hemsby sits at a low elevation of around 9 metres above sea level, looking out over the North Sea. Hemsby is located approximately 17 miles east of Norwich and 113 miles north-east of London, making it a rural coastal community with a population of around 2052 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Norfolk, Hemsby included

Throughout the NR postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs in Hemsby reach most of Norfolk too, Newport, Dowe Hill and Winterton-on-Sea among them.

Guessing doesn't help by a county line or somewhere tricky to describe; phone and ask.

Anywhere your car stands — your driveway at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — our engineers drain it there, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Hemsby, a coastal village, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Hemsby?

There is no fair single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

What changes the price is, firstly, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Cross.

With that reason, every enquiry from Hemsby opens by asking the same trio — what went in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of any quote.

Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Hemsby: still next to your car?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with the car is to leave it.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Hemsby or anywhere in Norfolk.
