# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hemyock: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done just where your vehicle stands around Hemyock, is usually all it takes if caught before your engine runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the motor — but many current diesels driven round Hemyock and Madford hold another liquid too.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Hemyock?

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

On a drive off Fore Street before work, or in the car park at Catherine Wheel on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

No part stops the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes seconds, be it out in Millhayes or right in the centre of Hemyock.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Rosemary Lane or a forecourt around Hemyock, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Tiverton Parkway? Ask the person who drove the car last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the light appears — anywhere it is across Devon — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Station Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've located the filler and read it.

- The two behind one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five is out.

## Hemyock: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the engine.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Regent, BP or any other — the attendants will normally help roll the car away, when you ask.

At home in Hemyock? So the car stays where it is.

Where your motor has run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn the car off.

On the M5, under 5 miles from Hemyock, that means the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Exeter, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hemyock.

## Hemyock: what occurs when our engineers get there

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, whether by Hemyock Primary School, near Hemyock Baptist Church or at home, the van travels to it.

What liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because those answers set both work and price.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone sets off.

Then that tank is emptied and your system purged thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears out on its own, no matter how long it sits.

Filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of your car.

Then our technicians start the engine and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour once we are there.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains in Hemyock and across Devon

Over EX postcodes, the teams covering Hemyock — a village — work the nearby places too, Culm Davy and Ashculme among them.

Our van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting EX15 3.

No need to move the car.

The drain takes place on the spot, be it a driveway, a road near Hemyock Village Hall, or a lay-by towards Sidling Copse.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of St Marys Church? Close to a county line? Checking beats assuming, so ring.

## Hemyock people: the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Devon, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103.
