# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hendon: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

Keep your engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before the motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Hendon.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads around Hendon and Ashbrooke carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two side by side behind one flap.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It's in that gap that the slip lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hendon: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Robinson Terrace, perhaps at Victoria Gardens on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: an unfamiliar car.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, keeps on.

Whether it takes place in Sunderland or the middle of Hendon, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Thornhill Cresecent or a forecourt around Hendon.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of vehicles show which belongs in which inlet just there.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says where.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you collect a rental or company car — at Sunderland's car park, say — rather than once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, wherever around Tyne and Wear, use this routine.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Mainsforth Terrace West.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hendon already?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the engine.

Keep the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels it alone runs your fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — Shell, Asda or another — the staff will normally help roll the car clear, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Hendon.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Hendon sits under 10 miles from the A194(M); on it, take the next junction.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Hendon is a smaller job than driving under a mile towards Sunderland — so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians get there in Hendon, what takes place?

Outside Valley Road Academy, close to Raich Carter Sports Centre or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

What fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask since those answers decide the work and price.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Then that tank is drained and the system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle.

The motor is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before we go.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## The short version for Hendon people

Tip nothing until you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere in Tyne and Wear, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave it off then call 0333 366 0103.
