# Henfynyw: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Keep your engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, if the motor has not run, it is emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits around Henfynyw.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the why it happens and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels around Neuadd-Lwyd, like those in Henfynyw, carry on two fluids; the motor gets just the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for both, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what cap it needs.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens in Henfynyw

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up together.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Pen-y-Bryn, or outside Red Lion on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: an unfamiliar motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Ffos-y-ffin or the heart of Henfynyw: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Henfynyw forecourt or a drive over in Oakford, spend a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- On plenty of cars, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of motors mark what goes in which inlet right there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask when you collect a hire car or company car — from the nearest station's car park, say — rather than once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, wherever around Ceredigion, use this routine.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and not rushed beside Y Padogau on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Henfynyw?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Gulf, the Murco or anywhere else.

Your own drive around Henfynyw is the place it should stay.

Where the engine has been run already, stop somewhere safe and switch it off.

Henfynyw lies under 50 miles from the M4; there, take the first junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Swansea, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Henfynyw.

## What takes place when our technicians get there in Henfynyw

The van comes to the car wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Henfynyw Church, or outside the local primary school.

Which liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because the answers set both work and price.

The quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we arrive, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
