# Hengoed: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where the car sits around Hengoed, is normally all it needs when found before your engine runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

No single liquid but two: that's how many modern diesels near Hengoed and Tredomen carry, with diesel feeding the motor.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from its own tank.

There's a filler for each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Hengoed

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run out means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Acacia Avenue, or outside The Beech Tree on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: an unfamiliar motor.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it occurs in Cefn Hengoed or the middle of Hengoed, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these first, at a forecourt around Hengoed or a driveway over in Parc Penallta Country Park. Seconds, no more.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- On plenty of motors, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning comes on — wherever it is around Caerphilly — a routine to follow.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and never in a rush by Heol Uchaf on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've found your filler and read the cap.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently using the own spout.

- Close the cap, and check once more — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start your car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hengoed already?

Don't start your motor: that is how the short order of things starts.

Keep the ignition off as well, since on many diesels it by itself starts the pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Petrol or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Hengoed.

Already run? Stop when it is safe, then turn off.

Come off the M4 — under 10 miles out of Hengoed — at the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Hengoed is smaller a job than a run of under 15 miles towards Newport, so say.

## What takes place when our engineers turn up in Hengoed

Our van comes to your car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Hengoed Wool Mill, or outside the local primary school.

Which fluid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because those replies decide the work and price.

Nobody sets off before you have heard our quote by phone.

Then that tank is cleared and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Before leaving, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it is running smoothly.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.

## About Hengoed itself

Hengoed is a suburban area in Caerphilly, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 185 metres. Hengoed is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting the typical residential development of the region.

## AdBlue drains about Hengoed, and Caerphilly beyond

Hengoed is a residential suburb, and our teams that cover it also work the places near it, Maesycwmmer and Ystrad Mynach among them, across the CF postcode area.

A postcode starting CF82 7 gets the van to you fastest.

The car doesn't need to move.

The drain happens right there, be it a driveway, a street by Ystrad Mynach Library, or a lay-by on the way to Maesycwmmer Primary Ground.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Sue Noake Leisure Centre, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## Hengoed motorists: the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

Even so AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can drain it where it stands, anywhere in Caerphilly: keep it off and ring 0333 366 0103.
