# Hengoed: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Keep the engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Usually, when the engine has not turned, it is drained and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits around Hengoed.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels on the roads about Hengoed and Pentre-clawdd carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

There's a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which filler it needs.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hengoed: how it happens

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Garside Close, or heading home in the car park outside The Last Inn.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: a strange car.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and after the tip starts, no part halts it.

It's seconds, whether out in Daywall or bang in the centre of Hengoed.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these first, at a forecourt in Hengoed or a drive over in Preeshenlle. A few seconds, no more.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Gobowen's car park, say — rather than once the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Anywhere across Shropshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Henry Robertson Drive, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've located the filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Stop once the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently using its own spout.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Hengoed?

Don't start the motor: that's how the short order of things begins.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the BP, ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

Your own drive around Hengoed is where it stays.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M53, under 25 miles from Hengoed, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Hengoed is smaller work than a trip of under 15 miles towards Wrexham, so say.

## Hengoed: what occurs when our technicians get there

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Gobowen Primary School, near All Saints or on your own drive.

What liquid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because those answers set both work and price.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

Then that tank is cleared and the system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

After that we fire it up and check it runs properly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after we arrive, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## Hengoed and Shropshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Over SY postcodes, the vans that cover Hengoed — a village — work the nearby locations too, Gobowen and Upper Hengoed among them.

Quickest of all: give a SY10 7 postcode for the van.

No need to shift the vehicle.

Anywhere it stands — near WW1 War Memorial, in a lay-by en route to Gobowen Playing Field, on a drive — that is where it is emptied.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of St John, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## For Hengoed motorists, the short version
